The Best Focaccia Recipe for Beginners

For the past few months, I’ve been learning how to make bread. This focaccia bread recipe, by far, has been one of the easiest and most delicious recipes my family has tried. Even my toddler loves it. It takes just a few minutes to prep the dough and has only a handful of ingredients. And, it’s hard to mess upeven for me! You also don’t need any special mixers or baking equipment to make it. I hope you enjoy this easy focaccia recipe as much as we do!

Equipment

  • large mixing bowl
  • spoon to mix the dough
  • towel to cover the bowl
  • 2 glass pie dishes or 1 large cookie baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons instant dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water
  • Olive oil to drizzle
  • (optional) garlic salt to sprinkle on top

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, yeast, and salt in a large bowl
  2. Add the warm (not hot) water to the flour mixture, then gently mix it to form the bread dough
  3. Gently knead the dough in the bowl a few times
  4. Add about a tablespoon of olive oil to the bowl and roll the lump of dough around in the oil to lightly coat the dough with the oil
  5. Cover the bowl with a damp towel
  6. Place the bowl in a warm place and let it rise for 1.5 to 2 hours until the dough has just about doubled in size (I usually turn on the light in my oven and place the bowl in the oven and close the door. The oven light provides a tiny bit of heat to help the dough rise)
  7. Grease two pie dishes with butter (or prepare a large baking sheet by covering it with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat)
  8. Split the lump of dough in half (if using 2 pie dishes) and place one lump in each pie dish. Gently stretch the dough to fill the bottom of the pie dishes (or stretch into a large rectangle on your prepared baking sheet)
  9. Allow the dough to rise for 30 more minutes
  10. Preheat the oven to 425F degrees (be sure to take your dough out of the oven first if that’s where you’ve been letting it rise)
  11. While the oven is preheating, gently press your fingers into the top of your dough to create about a dozen indents across the top of each lump
  12. Drizzle the top with about 1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil, allowing some of it to sink into the indentations
  13. (optional) lightly sprinkle the top with coarse garlic salt for extra flavor
  14. Bake for 25 minutes
  15. Allow to fully cool before cutting for best results
  16. Enjoy!
